Madrid, October 29, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
The death toll from a collision involving two high-speed trains in central Spain has risen to 68, prompting the Indian Embassy in Madrid to issue emergency contact details for Indian nationals who may have been travelling on the affected services and their relatives.
The embassy has urged those seeking assistance to contact the mission and share its emergency helpline details with others who may need support. The collision occurred on Wednesday morning near Urda station in Toledo province, around 120 km south of Madrid, on the high-speed line connecting Madrid and Seville.
The crash involved a Renfe high-speed train and a stationary Iryo service. The impact caused several carriages to derail, with some tumbling down an embankment. Spanish authorities reported that 58 people had been hospitalised, including 15 in critical condition, while others with minor injuries were treated at temporary medical centres.
Spanish Transport Minister Oscar Puente said a computer communication failure had disabled the LZB railway safety control system across a 63-km stretch, bringing trains to a halt. He described as “inexplicable” the subsequent decision by a control centre to authorise a Renfe train to resume its journey despite a red signal.
The precise sequence of events and the cause of the collision remain under investigation.
Rescue teams continued searching the wreckage for victims, with regional authorities warning that more bodies could be recovered.
Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced three days of national mourning for those killed in the disaster and pledged a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision.
