Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on the Central government over rising inflation, accusing the Narendra Modi-led government of imposing an increasing financial burden on households and claiming that it now wanted to “eliminate the right to live”.
In a post on X, Kharge said the government was allegedly seeking to strip people of their voting rights while soaring prices were eroding household incomes, particularly during the festive season.
“The Modi government, desperate to strip away voting rights, now wants to eliminate the right to live as well. Amidst festivals, back-breaking inflation is gobbling up every single penny of earnings,” the Congress president said.
Arguing that figures reflected the economic situation, Kharge cited several indicators, claiming that food inflation had increased from 2.13 per cent to 7.74 per cent, household debt had risen by 36.7 per cent and household financial savings had declined by 4 per cent. He also cited retail inflation of 5.54 per cent and wholesale inflation of 11.39 per cent.
Kharge shared a comparative table showing changes in the prices of essential commodities between May 2014 and October 2026 to highlight the increase in household expenses.
According to the figures he shared, onion prices had climbed from Rs 23 per kg in May 2014 to Rs 53.32 per kg in October 2026, marking an increase of 131.83 per cent. Tomato prices rose from Rs 17.50 per kg to Rs 39.62 per kg, an increase of 126.40 per cent.
Mustard oil prices also recorded a significant rise, increasing from Rs 102 per litre to Rs 207.80 per litre, according to the table, representing an increase of 103.73 per cent.
Taking a swipe at the BJP over its earlier campaign promises on inflation, Kharge urged the ruling party to revisit its pre-2014 advertisements.
“If the BJP, now sitting in power and staging sit-ins today, and Mr Modi ever find time away from their senseless grandstanding, they should rewatch their own BJP ad from before 2014: ‘Enough of inflation’s blows!” the Congress chief said.
Kharge further claimed that people had “wasted” 12 years waiting for the promised “good days”, a phrase associated with the BJP’s 2014 election campaign.
His remarks come amid the Opposition’s ongoing campaign against the BJP-led government and the Election Commission of India (ECI) over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Meanwhile, the Congress-led INDIA bloc is planning a ‘Delhi Chalo’ march at Ramlila Ground in New Delhi on November 1. The proposed demonstration is aimed at protesting against the ECI and pressing for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
