United Nations, October 28, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

India has voted in favour of a United Nations General Assembly resolution calling for an end to the US economic, commercial and financial embargo on Cuba, reiterating its opposition to laws that have extraterritorial effects and undermine the sovereignty of other countries.

Soumya Nair, a counsellor at India’s UN Mission, said New Delhi supported the Assembly’s call for states to refrain from enacting or enforcing measures that adversely affect other countries’ sovereignty, development and prosperity.

“India’s commitment to multilateralism is rooted in our belief that international challenges are best addressed through dialogue and diplomacy in accordance with the UN Charter,” Nair said.

The resolution was adopted by 130 votes to 17, with 25 abstentions. India said lifting the embargo at the earliest would help Cuba participate more fully in international cooperation and pursue its development goals.

Nair also highlighted the impact of restrictions on Cuba’s essential services. She said the country’s health system faced shortages of more than 60 per cent of essential medicines, while food production had fallen by over 50 per cent in the past five years. Restrictions on fuel exports, she added, had disrupted healthcare, education, water supplies, food distribution and transportation.

The vote followed a tense exchange in the Assembly on Tuesday, when Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla approached the dais while US Permanent Representative Mike Waltz was speaking. Assembly President Khalilur Rahman briefly suspended proceedings to restore order.

On Wednesday, Waltz said the US had expelled Cuban mission First Secretary Richard Tur de la Concepcion over an alleged physical altercation involving a US diplomat. He warned that physical confrontations with American diplomats would have consequences.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, called on all delegations to respect the Assembly’s decorum, rules and procedures.
