Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal took a dig at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday by sharing an AI-generated image mocking the party’s performance in Legislative Council elections across four states.
The image portrayed Gandhi as a petrol pump employee, with a fuel dispenser displaying the names of Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar and Karnataka. The meter read “0.00”, referring to the Congress’s failure to win any of the 28 seats it contested across the four states.
Goyal shared the image on social media with the caption, “Zero check karlo Bhai”.
The post was part of a wider campaign by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its leaders to target the Congress following the results. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other BJP leaders also criticised the opposition party over its allegations concerning Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and its demand for a return to ballot-paper voting.
The BJP argued that the results weakened the Congress’s criticism of the electoral process.
Separately, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman responded to Gandhi’s allegation that the Tata Group was being “criminally destroyed”.
In a post on X, Sitharaman urged the Leader of the Opposition to avoid politicising every issue, adding that casually describing commercial and legal matters as criminal was unacceptable.
Gandhi had alleged that Indian businesses were being treated as the “plaything” of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Referring to Tata, he questioned why business leaders were remaining silent amid what he described as the group’s destruction.
The exchanges marked another round of public sparring between the BJP and Congress, with the election results and allegations concerning Indian industry becoming points of political confrontation.
