The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear a range of matters related to worsening air pollution in Delhi-NCR, stubble burning and the proposed sale of green firecrackers on Thursday, ahead of the Diwali festival.
The proceedings come amid concerns over deteriorating air quality and the need to strengthen pollution-control measures during the festive period. The court is expected to consider the restrictions governing firecracker manufacturing and use, including whether green firecrackers can be permitted for sale in the region.
Under an earlier order aimed at tackling air pollution, the manufacturing, storage and use of all types of firecrackers in Delhi-NCR had been prohibited. During a subsequent hearing, however, the court indicated the possibility of a limited relaxation by allowing manufacturers to produce green firecrackers for the region.
The court had clarified that permission to manufacture such products would not automatically authorise their sale. The question of allowing green firecrackers to be sold is therefore expected to be a key issue in the latest proceedings.
The apex court had also directed the Central Government to consult relevant stakeholders and work towards a balanced policy governing the manufacture and use of firecrackers in Delhi-NCR.
Beyond firecrackers, the hearing is expected to address the wider challenge of air pollution, including the contribution of stubble burning to deteriorating air quality across the region.
In earlier observations, the court had emphasised the importance of public awareness and voluntary participation in reducing pollution caused by firecrackers, noting the challenges involved in enforcing restrictive orders on the ground.
The proceedings could provide further clarity on the regulatory approach to green firecrackers and other measures to curb pollution ahead of Diwali.
