Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal has accused Union Home Minister Amit Shah of attempting to undermine Punjab’s fight against drugs by reportedly exploring a political alliance with Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia. The remarks came after Punjab Police filed a chargesheet against Majithia in a case involving allegations of drug-related proceeds worth Rs 736 crore.
Kejriwal warned that Punjab would not allow the state to return to a drug crisis, while senior AAP leaders Manish Sisodia and Anurag Dhanda praised Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s government for pursuing the investigation against the influential Akali leader.
Taking to X, Kejriwal said, “Someone who sold drugs worth ₹736 crore in Punjab and deposited that money in his bank accounts is now the person with whom Amit Shah is preparing to form an alliance to push Punjab back into the drug crisis. Will drugs now be brought through Gujarat and sold in Punjab? The people of Punjab will never allow this.”
Senior AAP leader and Punjab in-charge Manish Sisodia congratulated Mann for pursuing the case and said the chargesheet detailed allegations concerning the generation and movement of Rs 736 crore in drug-related proceeds.
“I once again congratulate Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann for his courage and determination. The chargesheet filed by the Punjab Police against Bikram Singh Majithia today details how he earned ₹736 crore by selling drugs and deposited the money in bank accounts of his companies. After this chargesheet, Majithia will rot in jail for the rest of his life,” Sisodia said.
Sisodia alleged that the drug crisis worsened during the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal)-BJP government between 2007 and 2017, when, according to him, Majithia wielded considerable political influence.
He said Mann had sent Majithia to jail and that the filing of the chargesheet marked another significant step in the proceedings against him.
“The entire Punjab knows that Chitta entered the state during the ten years of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal)-BJP government from 2007 to 2017. Bikram Singh Majithia was so powerful that nobody had the courage to speak against him. Bhagwant Singh Mann sent the same Bikram Singh Majithia to jail, and today a chargesheet has been filed against him in court,” Sisodia said.
He further alleged that drugs entering Punjab from Pakistan had declined and claimed that Gujarat had become a major source of supply. Sisodia accused the BJP and Majithia of joining hands to obstruct the Mann government’s anti-drug campaign.
“Most of the drugs now come from Gujarat. That is why Amit Shah and Bikram Singh Majithia have come together. Their attempt is to save this drug network at any cost. Amit Shah and Bikram Singh Majithia have joined hands to stop the war against drugs that Bhagwant Singh Mann has been waging, putting his own life on the line,” he added.
AAP National Media In-charge Anurag Dhanda described the chargesheet as a significant development, arguing that successive governments had failed to take comparable action against Majithia despite years of public debate over Punjab’s drug problem.
Dhanda said the Punjab Police had filed a chargesheet running to 40,000 pages and maintained that the investigation had reached a crucial stage by placing the allegations before the court.
“Political parties have repeatedly promised to eliminate drugs, including the BJP, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the Congress. But the real test is whether governments act against powerful people. CM Bhagwant Singh Mann’s government arrested Bikram Singh Majithia, and the Punjab Police has now filed a 40,000-page chargesheet. This action will be remembered in Punjab’s political history because it takes the investigation against a powerful leader to the stage of a detailed chargesheet,” Dhanda said.
He also referred to allegations and controversies surrounding Majithia that have featured in public debate over the years, including claims concerning international drug traffickers and alleged drug-money transactions worth Rs 6,000 crore.
According to Dhanda, the latest chargesheet details an alleged Rs 736 crore money trail and examines the movement of funds through companies linked to Majithia, including investments, company assets and financial transactions.
“The chargesheet filed now details a ₹736 crore drug money trail and the alleged movement of money through companies linked to Bikram Singh Majithia. It sets out how the money was allegedly invested, how company assets grew and how the financial transactions took place. The evidence must now be examined through the judicial process,” he said.
Dhanda questioned why previous Congress and SAD-BJP governments had not taken similar action against Majithia, adding that the Mann government had pursued the investigation to the chargesheet stage.
He said the filing marked a distinction between political promises to eliminate drugs and action through the criminal justice system.
“The details of how the money was allegedly earned and invested are now before the court. The evidence must be tested through the judicial process, and those found guilty must face the consequences,” Dhanda said.
He added that effective action against the drug trade required investigations into influential figures and the financial networks allegedly supporting the business, rather than focusing solely on arrests of lower-level operators.
Questioning the BJP’s position on drugs and organised crime, Dhanda also referred to a high-profile gangster being lodged in a Gujarat jail. He said authorities needed to act against alleged drug networks irrespective of the political influence of those under investigation.
Concluding his remarks, Dhanda said Punjab’s youth and families had suffered heavily because of drugs and called for the financial trail to be investigated thoroughly.
“The fight cannot end with arrests or political statements. The financial trail must be investigated, the evidence must be presented before the court, and those found guilty must face the consequences. The chargesheet filed against Bikram Singh Majithia is an important step in that process,” he said.
