Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday targeted the Congress and Rahul Gandhi after the party failed to win any of the 28 seats contested in biennial Legislative Council elections across four states.
In a post on X, Shah asked how many seats the Congress had won out of 28 and answered “zero”. He added the taunt “resign, Ballot Box”, an apparent jab at the Congress’s repeated allegations of irregularities involving Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).
The accompanying illustration appeared to depict Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, looking at the election results.
The contests involved limited electorates, including graduates and teachers, rather than the general population. While Legislative Council results do not directly determine the outcome of Assembly or parliamentary elections, they can offer an indication of political support among these specific voter groups.
In Karnataka, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance, which includes the Janata Dal (Secular), secured a 4-0 sweep, dealing a setback to the ruling Congress.
Uttar Pradesh saw contests primarily between the BJP and the Samajwadi Party. The BJP won multiple constituencies, while the SP secured key teachers’ seats and remained the principal opposition force in the contests.
Bihar produced a mixed outcome, with the BJP and its ally Janata Dal (United) winning several seats. The Rashtriya Janata Dal also registered a victory, while the Jan Suraaj Party opened its account and independents won seats.
In Maharashtra, the Congress again failed to secure a victory, according to the reported results.
Shah’s remarks come as the Congress seeks to strengthen Rahul Gandhi’s role as a leading opposition voice and build a united front against the BJP-led government.
