Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has declared three days of national mourning following a deadly high-speed train collision in central Spain that killed at least 68 people and injured dozens more.
Visiting an emergency operations centre near the crash site in Toledo province on Wednesday, Sánchez pledged a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the disaster, including possible human error, operational negligence and failures in railway safety systems.
“We will get to the bottom of this,” the Prime Minister said, assuring the public that any responsibility identified through the investigation would be addressed. He described the tragedy as a national loss, saying that all of Spain was in mourning.
Sánchez said the immediate priority was to rescue survivors, support the families of those affected and provide urgent medical care, alongside longer-term psychological assistance for victims.
The collision occurred on Wednesday morning on the high-speed railway line connecting Madrid and Seville, near Urda station in Toledo province, approximately 120 kilometres south of the capital.
Preliminary reports indicate that a Renfe high-speed train struck the rear of a stationary Iryo passenger train. The impact caused several carriages to derail, with some falling down an embankment.
Emiliano García-Page, president of the autonomous community of Castilla-La Mancha, confirmed that the death toll had reached 68 as emergency teams continued searching the wreckage for victims and possible survivors.
Railway authorities and investigative agencies have launched an inquiry to establish how the two trains came to occupy the same section of track and whether technical or operational failures contributed to the collision.
The investigation is expected to examine the sequence of events leading to the crash and determine whether any safety procedures were breached.
