Madrid, October 28, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

At least 46 people were reportedly killed after two high-speed trains collided in Spain’s Toledo province on Wednesday, according to media reports. The accident involved a Renfe AVE service and a private Iryo train, with authorities warning that the death toll could rise as rescue operations continue.

Emergency services were alerted at 8:54 a.m. local time following the violent collision near the railway station in Urda. Rescue teams, including firefighters from Alcázar de San Juan and Orgaz, Civil Protection units from neighbouring municipalities and three medical helicopters, were deployed to the site to search for survivors and assist the injured.

According to local authorities cited by Spain-based Sur in English, at least 39 fatalities had been reported. Other media reports put the reported death toll at 46, with the situation still developing.

The two trains were carrying a total of 544 passengers, according to figures provided by Esther Padilla, spokesperson for the regional government of Castilla-La Mancha. Spain-based El País reported that the Iryo train had 146 passengers and a baby on board, while the Renfe service was carrying 397 passengers.

The cause of the collision remains unknown, regional government officials said. However, a spokesperson for Spain’s Ministry of Transport said initial indications suggested that the AVE train may have struck the Iryo train from behind. The impact reportedly caused two carriages of the Iryo service to derail and fall down an embankment.

Rail traffic on the high-speed corridor connecting Madrid with Andalusia was completely suspended from 8:54 a.m. local time following the accident. The disruption also affected medium-distance and high-speed services.

In a statement posted on X, Iryo announced that all services departing from Madrid’s Atocha station and heading towards the southern corridor had been suspended because of the collision. According to El País, there was no immediate estimate of when services would resume.

The private rail operator said it had activated “all emergency protocols” and was “collaborating closely” with the authorities to manage the situation and respond to the emergency.

Renfe also confirmed the suspension of railway services between Madrid, Ciudad Real and Andalusia as rescue operations and assessments at the accident site continued.

Authorities were working to establish the full extent of the disaster, identify the victims and determine the circumstances that led to the collision.
