Actress Sobhita Dhulipala has opened up about the demanding physical preparation for Pa. Ranjith’s upcoming action film Vettuvam, revealing that the cast performed the stunts themselves despite the use of stunt doubles during rehearsals.
The film required its actors to undergo rigorous training in traditional physical and martial arts forms, including Mallakhamba, as they prepared for its action-heavy sequences.
“The preparation that went into this role blasted open my mind and body into new kinds of awareness,” Sobhita said in a statement.
She explained that some of the choreographed sequences required years of martial arts experience, making the preparation particularly challenging.
“Some of the sequences that were choreographed require years of martial arts practice, so even while there were stunt doubles for rehearsals, we all made sure to do every single stunt on our own, and we were a really solid team; we took it as a challenge,” she said.
Describing the experience as inspiring, Sobhita also credited her co-stars for supporting her through the physically demanding process.
“A special shout out to the boys in the film for being my friends through this wild journey together. I thrive in physical charge and this film gave me the space to experience it with such great energy,” she said.
Her preparation for Vettuvam went beyond conventional action training. She trained in Adi Murai, Malla Khambh and the use of Surul, a traditional weapon featuring flexible curling blades.
Directed by Pa. Ranjith, Vettuvam follows a rural gangster who is regarded as a modern-day Robin Hood by his people. He surrenders to the police to escape his enemies, only to discover that the prison system presents dangers far worse than those he left behind.
Sobhita made her acting debut with Anurag Kashyap’s Raman Raghav 2.0 in 2016 before gaining wider recognition with the series Made in Heaven.
She has since appeared in films including Goodachari, Major, Moothon, Kurup, Ponniyin Selvan: I, Ponniyin Selvan: II and the Hindi crime thriller series The Night Manager. She also made her Hollywood debut with the action thriller Monkey Man.
