Punjab Public Works Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO on Friday reviewed the progress of road development and upgradation projects across the state and directed officials to accelerate ongoing works while ensuring that project timelines account for seasonal weather conditions.

Chairing a meeting at Punjab Bhawan, the minister said the Bhagwant Singh Mann-led government was committed to developing a better and more efficient road transportation network for the people of Punjab.

During the review, ETO directed officials to provide adequate execution time while finalising timelines for road and bridge projects during the tendering process. He specifically asked them to factor in the rainy and winter seasons to ensure that projects are completed within the stipulated period.

The minister accorded special priority to projects being undertaken under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) and NABARD infrastructure development assistance programmes and called for their timely completion. He also directed officials to ensure timely payments to contractors so that ongoing works remain uninterrupted and the department meets its financial targets.

ETO further instructed officials to ensure proper lane marking and installation of necessary road-safety equipment across the state’s roads.

He said the Mann government was undertaking construction and upgradation works covering 45,000 kilometres of roads across Punjab.

The minister also reviewed the constituency-wise and division-wise status of ongoing state highway and link-road projects being executed under the Public Works Department. Noting that current weather conditions were suitable for bituminous works, he directed officials to make full use of the favourable conditions and speed up execution.

Officials were asked to immediately submit pending demands for funds and ensure timely release of payments so that financial constraints do not hamper the progress of ongoing projects.

ETO said he would conduct another review of the road development works shortly.

Those present at the meeting included Special Secretary Hargunjeet Kaur, Joint Secretary Amarbir Sidhu, Engineer-in-Chief Gagandeep Singh, Chief Engineers Anil Gupta and Arshdeep Singh, along with Superintending Engineers and Executive Engineers.
