Trinamool Congress (TMC) Lok Sabha member Mahua Moitra on Friday filed a complaint at Tehatta Police Station in West Bengal’s Nadia district against eight BJP activists over the alleged egg attack on her during her visit to Tehatta on September 16.
Among those named in the complaint are the panchayat samiti chief and deputy chief of Tehatta-I block. A district police officer confirmed that an investigation had been launched based on Moitra’s complaint.
“CCTV and video footage of the entire incident is being examined,” the officer said.
Moitra had gone to Tehatta to attend a party meeting when protesters allegedly waved black flags, raised slogans and threw eggs at her as she left the venue. She later shared videos of the incident on social media and accused BJP office-bearers of surrounding the meeting venue and targeting her convoy. The allegations have also been reported by other media outlets.
The BJP’s Nadia district leadership, however, denied that any of its workers were involved in the egg-throwing incident.
BJP MLA from Tehatta Assembly constituency Subrata Kobiraj said no BJP worker or supporter was involved. He claimed that protests had emerged in response to Moitra’s “controversial comments” about Hindu gods and goddesses and described the incident as an expression of public anger.
Moitra also referred to a recent observation by Supreme Court Justice Dipankar Datta concerning her apprehension over egg attacks. Responding to the incident, she said she had faced the situation in the spirit of a freedom fighter facing bullets. Reports from September 16 also quoted her as invoking the judge’s earlier observation after the incident.
She alleged that BJP office-bearers, rather than members of the general public, had surrounded her meeting and thrown eggs at her while she was leaving.
Moitra also questioned the conduct of Tehatta police station officer-in-charge Supriya Ranjan Maji, who had allegedly said he was not informed about her visit. The TMC MP claimed that the Nadia district police superintendent had issued a letter regarding her visit, with Maji marked on the communication.
The police are examining CCTV and video footage as part of the investigation into the complaint.
