South Central Railway (SCR) has cancelled 11 trains as Cyclone Arnab intensifies over the Bay of Bengal and is expected to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast on Wednesday as a very severe cyclonic storm.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, SCR said the cancellations were ordered in the interest of passenger safety and the safe operation of trains amid the likelihood of heavy rainfall and strong winds across parts of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.

Ten trains scheduled to commence their journeys on October 27 have been cancelled, along with another train scheduled to depart on October 28.

The cancelled services include the Secunderabad–Howrah Falaknuma Superfast Express, Secunderabad–Bhubaneswar New Visakha Express, Hyderabad–Visakhapatnam Godavari Superfast Express, Mahabubnagar–Visakhapatnam Superfast Express, Secunderabad–Visakhapatnam Garibrath Superfast Express, Lingampalli–Kakinada Town Cocanada Superfast Express, Lingampalli–Narsapur Express, Lingampalli–Kakinada Port Gowthami Superfast Express, Hazur Sahib Nanded–Sambalpur Nagavalli Superfast Express, Charlapalli–Srikakulam Road Special and Srikakulam Road–Charlapalli Special.

The Nagarsol–Narsapur train has been partially cancelled between Charlapalli and Narsapur. The Howrah–Secunderabad Falaknuma Express, scheduled to leave Howrah on October 29, has also been cancelled.

The railway authorities have already announced the cancellation of 61 trains in view of the cyclone threat.

SCR said train services across the region could be cancelled, diverted or rescheduled depending on the intensity and impact of the cyclone. The changes are intended to ensure the safety of passengers, railway staff and infrastructure.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Cyclone Arnab is expected to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam, near Yanam, on the morning of October 28 as a very severe cyclonic storm.

The IMD has issued a red alert for Khammam, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Mulugu and Mahabubabad districts of Telangana for October 28. Heavy rainfall is also forecast in Warangal, Hanumakonda, Suryapet and Nalgonda on October 28 and 29.

In view of the anticipated weather conditions, additional changes to train services operating through vulnerable sections may be announced as required.

South Central Railway General Manager Sanjay Kumar Srivastava reviewed preparedness and safety measures with Secunderabad Divisional Railway Manager Dr R. Gopalakrishnan and other officials.

During the review, officials assessed vulnerable railway sections and bridges, patrolling arrangements, and the deployment of patrolmen and watchmen at sensitive locations. The status of water levels in tanks was also examined.

Srivastava reviewed the readiness and positioning of boulder, sandbag and ballast rakes, along with Accident Relief Trains (ARTs) and Accident Relief Medical Equipment (ARMEs) at Kazipet and Dornakal.

The General Manager directed heads of all departments to remain on high alert to protect passengers, railway personnel and railway assets. Officers and senior supervisors at divisional and headquarters levels are closely monitoring train operations, bridge conditions and water levels at vulnerable locations.

Passengers have been advised to plan their journeys according to the prevailing weather conditions and check the status of their trains before departure. SCR said information about cancellations, diversions and rescheduling would be communicated through SMS to passengers who provided mobile numbers while booking reserved tickets.
