Music composer Himesh Reshammiya has shared his perspective on the longevity of Hindi film music, saying that every song has its own destiny and that the right timing can play a crucial role in its success.

Speaking on film trade expert Komal Nahta’s podcast Game Changers: The Music Series, Himesh discussed his approach to composing songs well before they are selected for films. He explained that creating music under tight deadlines does not always produce the best results, while compositions developed without time pressure can find the right opportunity years later.

“I always feel that if you go in search of a song today, we say that such music is not made. It is not made because if you give me a deadline that I want a song in a month, it is possible that a great song can be made. It can be made in a minute too. But it is possible that it is not made,” he said.

The composer explained that when a film’s shooting schedule leaves only 15 days or a month to finalise a song, filmmakers may have to choose from the compositions already available, even if those songs are not the best fit at that moment.

He said that creating a strong composition without the pressure of a deadline allows a composer to build a collection of songs that can be considered for the right project when the opportunity arises.

Himesh also spoke about his process of seeking feedback on his compositions, saying he shares them with 100 to 200 people to gauge their response. Songs that receive a positive reaction are added to his collection for possible use in the future.

To illustrate his approach, he cited the popular track Hookah Bar, saying its tune had been created years before the song was released in a film.

“I make people do it. 100-200 people. They say it is a good song. Yes, I tell everyone. After that, if it is good, it comes in stock. And then when it is made after 10 years, 20 years. All my songs were made in the 90s. The tune of ‘Hookah Bar’ came out in 2012. But that song was made in 2004 or 2005,” he said.

According to Himesh, a song’s basic musical structure and hook line are particularly important, but their impact also depends on when they reach audiences.

“So the basic graph is very important. Its hook line is very important. But it is very important to come with the right timing. And that is somewhere where my calculation has worked by the grace of God,” he added.

His remarks highlight an approach to music-making in which compositions can be created well in advance and wait for the right film, moment and audience before finding their place in Hindi cinema.
