Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur has revealed that his daughter Kaveri Kapur agreed to act in his upcoming film Masoom: The Next Generation only after insisting on undergoing a screen test, saying she did not want to be launched solely because she was his daughter.
In a recent Instagram post, Shekhar said he had initially approached Kaveri about acting in the film, but she declined because she was focused on her work as a singer-songwriter and poet. Her poetry book was also nearing publication at the time.
Kaveri eventually agreed to take up a role, but made it clear that she wanted to audition for the part.
Shekhar wrote that Kaveri “wouldn’t want to just be ‘launched’ by her dad” and therefore insisted that he conduct a screen test with her before she joined the project.
Kaveri will play the character Tia in Masoom: The Next Generation, which is being directed by Shekhar Kapur. The film is co-produced by Kapur and composer A.R. Rahman, who is also handling its music.
The filmmaker also shared details about the film’s central theme, describing it as a story about the meaning of home, family, love and longing.
He questioned whether home is merely a physical space or an emotion, memory or a longing to return to the comfort of parents and grandparents. He also reflected on the experiences of people who have left their homes and become migrants while continuing to yearn for a sense of belonging.
The film features an ensemble cast comprising Shabana Azmi, Naseeruddin Shah, Manoj Bajpayee, Nithya Menen, Jugal Hansraj and Kaveri Kapur.
Masoom: The Next Generation is described as a spiritual sequel to Shekhar Kapur’s acclaimed 1983 film Masoom, with the new story exploring family, relationships and the emotional meaning of home.
