At least seven devotees were killed and more than 12 injured in a stampede outside the Ashok Dham Temple in Bihar’s Lakhisarai district on Monday morning, triggering panic among thousands gathered to observe the third Monday of the holy month of Sawan.
The incident occurred amid a massive rush of devotees who had arrived at the temple to offer prayers and perform Jalabhishek. According to officials, an unprecedented surge in the crowd, intensified by the arrival of two trains around 6.30-6.45 a.m., led to the collapse of a barricade outside the temple.
There were also reports that an electric wire fell, triggering panic among devotees. As rumours spread through the crowd, people began rushing in different directions, resulting in a stampede in which several devotees were trapped and crushed.
Lakhisarai District Magistrate Shailendra Kumar said the sudden influx of devotees was a major factor behind the incident.
Police and administrative officials rushed to the temple after receiving information and launched rescue operations. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, while authorities stepped up crowd management and security arrangements at the site.
Local residents and fellow devotees also joined the rescue efforts.
The Ashok Dham Temple, also known as the Shri Indradamaneshwar Mahadev Temple, houses a large Shivalinga and witnesses a significant increase in footfall during Sawan, when devotees undertake prayers and rituals dedicated to Lord Shiva.
Sawan, also known as Shravan, is considered one of the most auspicious months in the Hindu calendar. Devotees across the country observe fasts, perform puja and visit Shiva temples during the month, which generally falls in July and August.
