Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and YSR Congress Party president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has criticised the arrests of Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka in Delhi, saying the action would only aggravate the situation instead of addressing concerns over the electoral process.
Reacting to the arrests in a post on X on Wednesday, Jagan called for a proactive approach to resolving the issues raised by protesters and restoring public confidence in elections.
“A proactive approach always yields better results than a reactive stance. The system has a flaw that needs to be corrected. Trust in the electoral process must be restored,” he said.
Arguing that the arrests would not resolve the underlying concerns, the former Chief Minister added that he empathised with Das and Ranka.
The two CJP leaders were arrested in Delhi on charges of trespassing at Jantar Mantar. A Delhi court subsequently remanded them to five days of judicial custody.
Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president K.T. Rama Rao had also criticised the arrests, describing the judicial custody order as a “new level of Emergency”.
Rama Rao said young people speaking out against perceived flaws in the system should not be imprisoned for exercising their democratic rights. He also questioned the trespassing cases against the two leaders, arguing that protest and dissent were integral to democracy.
“Dissent is the cornerstone of any democracy,” he said, recalling the role of protests and public movements in India’s freedom struggle.
CJP founder and convenor Abhijeet Dipke thanked Rama Rao for speaking out against what he described as the “illegal arrests” of Das and Ranka.
Responding to Dipke, the BRS leader expressed solidarity with the CJP founder and called for a collective effort towards building a better India.
