The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and the broader Opposition ecosystem of seeking regime change in India, after All India Students’ Association (AISA) president Neha Bora praised Bangladesh’s Gen-Z movement as an inspiration for young people in the country.

BJP national spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari alleged that the remarks showed that the Congress and its allies were not pursuing political resistance through democratic means. He accused them of attempting to undermine India’s Constitution and democratic institutions, claims that reflect the BJP’s political position.

Bora, speaking at an event on Wednesday, praised Bangladesh’s student-led movement and congratulated the Socialist Students Front on its sixth national conference. She said the movement had shown young people in India a way to mobilise in support of democracy and voting rights.

The AISA leader also drew parallels between student activism in Bangladesh and protests in India, arguing that young people were participating in movements to defend democratic principles and electoral rights.

Reacting to her remarks, Bhandari referred to Rahul Gandhi’s earlier support for Bora during student protests and alleged that the Congress leader’s political campaign was aimed at bringing about a change of regime similar to events in Bangladesh.

He also cited remarks he attributed to advocate Prashant Bhushan about a revolution, using them to allege a wider effort to destabilise India’s democratic system. These accusations were not independently established in the material provided.

Bora has emerged as a prominent figure in protests over alleged “vote theft” and concerns surrounding the Election Commission of India’s revision of electoral rolls.

Rahul Gandhi has been leading the INDIA bloc’s campaign on the issue, with Opposition parties demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

Earlier this week, Bora attended a tea meeting hosted by Gandhi alongside INDIA bloc leaders, activists and civil society members. The gathering was aimed at coordinating the Opposition’s campaign against the Election Commission and strengthening its response to allegations surrounding the electoral roll revision exercise.

The BJP, meanwhile, has accused the Congress of politicising the issue and attempting to discredit democratic institutions. The allegations over electoral-roll irregularities and the competing claims about the Opposition’s intentions remain politically contested.
