Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam has been summoned by the Delhi Police for questioning on Thursday in connection with sexual harassment allegations against him involving students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).
The police registered an FIR on October 11 following a complaint by JNU Chief Security Officer. The case was lodged at Vasant Kunj North police station under Sections 75, 75(1)(i), 75(1)(iv) and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), officials said.
Akoijam, a Congress MP and former JNU professor who was dismissed by the university, has been named in the FIR. Police are investigating the allegations.
According to reports, at least 11 female students filed sexual harassment complaints against Akoijam in May. The complaints alleged that he invited students to his campus residence on the pretext of meetings or gatherings and attempted to sexually harass them. Some students also alleged that he made obscene and inappropriate remarks in the classroom.
The complaints were reportedly examined during the inquiry that preceded the university’s decision to dismiss him. The allegations remain subject to investigation.
The case has also triggered a political confrontation, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) questioning the Congress leadership over its response to the allegations. The BJP has specifically challenged Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi over his silence, asking whether his call to “smash the patriarchy” amounted to mere political rhetoric.
On October 14, BJP leaders, along with National Commission for Women Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar, submitted a memorandum seeking action against the Congress MP.
A day earlier, a delegation of BJP women parliamentarians met President Droupadi Murmu and urged action against Akoijam. The delegation raised concerns over the allegations and argued that he should step down from his parliamentary position.
