Meghalaya Police has finalised elaborate security and traffic arrangements for Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s two-day visit to Shillong on October 4 and 5, during which he is scheduled to present the prestigious Presidential Colours to the state police force, officials said on Thursday.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said preparations were complete, with traffic management identified as the main challenge during the visit.
“Traffic is the biggest concern,” Syiem said, adding that police had drawn up plans to ensure smooth vehicle movement while minimising inconvenience to the public. The SP (Traffic) will issue advisories outlining routes to avoid and the timings of restrictions during VIP movement.
Around 1,500 police personnel will be deployed across key locations, venues and movement corridors linked to Shah’s programme. Tactical teams and personnel from different units have also been included in the security arrangements, Syiem said.
The Home Minister’s visit will centre on the formal presentation of the Presidential Colours to Meghalaya Police. The distinction is among the highest honours conferred on police and military organisations in recognition of distinguished service.
Syiem described the honour as a matter of pride for the force, noting that Meghalaya Police is among the few police organisations in the Northeast to receive the distinction. He attributed the recognition to the sacrifice, integrity and dedication of police personnel.
He said the force would continue striving to enhance professionalism and service delivery while upholding integrity in policing.
Authorities are expected to issue detailed traffic advisories ahead of the visit and have urged residents to follow the instructions and cooperate with personnel deployed across Shillong to minimise disruption.
