India’s Dhiraj Bommadevara and Kumkum Mohod won the silver medal in the recurve mixed team archery event at the Asian Games after losing to China in the final at Okazaki Chuo Sogo Park Multipurpose Square on Friday.
China’s victory also earned it a quota place for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, while India missed out on the quota after finishing second.
The silver is India’s second medal in recurve archery at the Games. Earlier in the day, the Indian women’s recurve team won its maiden Asian Games gold after defeating 10-time champions South Korea in their first-ever final appearance.
China took an early 2-0 lead in the mixed team final by winning the opening set 38-34. India fought back in the second set, but China again prevailed to move 4-0 ahead.
India finally got on the scoreboard in the third set. Kumkum and Dhiraj produced a strong finish to win the set 37-36 and reduce the deficit to 4-2.
The fourth set ended tied 37-37, which was enough for China to secure the gold medal.
Earlier, Dhiraj and Kumkum came from 3-1 down to beat Japan 5-3 in the semifinals, becoming the first Indian pair to reach the Asian Games recurve mixed team final.
Japan won the opening set 38-37, while the second ended 36-36. India then won the third set 39-35 and the fourth 37-35 to complete the comeback.
The silver took India’s archery medal tally at the Games to six, comprising four gold, one silver and one bronze.
India enjoyed its most successful Asian Games archery campaign at Hangzhou in 2023, winning a record nine medals — five gold, two silver and two bronze. Compound archers won all five gold medals on offer, while recurve teams contributed a silver and a bronze.
The men’s recurve team and the men’s and women’s individual recurve events are still to be contested at the ongoing Games.
