Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal has constituted an 11-member committee of lawyers to scrutinise content, statements, allegations and videos concerning the party and its leaders and initiate legal proceedings wherever it considers the material to be false or defamatory.
The committee will examine content being circulated on satellite television channels as well as social media platforms and, wherever required, pursue action under applicable provisions of criminal and civil law, the party said in a press note.
SAD Chief Spokesperson and Legal Wing president Advocate Arshdeep Singh Kler has been appointed coordinator of the committee, while Advocate Amardeep Singh Dharni will serve as its chairman.
The other members of the committee are Advocates Jaspreet Singh Brar, Saurabh Bhatia, Ravi Rana, K.S. Matharu, J.S. Dhillon, Ravinder Singh Sampla, Puneetinder Singh Kang, Ramandeep Kaur Bhattal, Manpreet Singh Dhaliwal and Arshdeep Singh Sra.
The party said it recognised the importance of what it described as “legitimate, positive and constructive criticism”, but maintained that content it considers false, baseless or defamatory would be carefully scrutinised and appropriate legal action pursued wherever warranted.
The announcement was made through a press note issued by SAD Senior Vice President-cum-Secretary Dr Daljit Singh Cheema.
The development comes amid heightened political exchanges in Punjab, with SAD and the ruling Aam Aadmi Party trading allegations on a range of issues in recent days. SAD Chief Spokesperson Arshdeep Singh Kler had on September 29 accused AAP spokespersons of raising what he termed “make-believe issues” to defame the Akali Dal, while questioning the government over several controversies.
