Delhi Lieutenant Governor T.S. Sandhu on Thursday inaugurated a Delhi Development Authority (DDA) sports complex in Rohini and announced that the L-G Cup for Hockey will be held from October 9 to 18 to encourage young athletes and promote participation in team sports.
Located in Sector 33, the sports complex spans around 8.11 hectares and has a built-up area of approximately 10,974 square metres. The facility has been developed to expand access to sporting infrastructure for residents of Rohini, outer Delhi and adjoining areas of North-West Delhi.
During the visit, Sandhu also went to the DDA’s Aarambh Library in Sector 11, Rohini, where he interacted with students preparing for civil services and other competitive examinations. He heard about their preparation routines and challenges and shared advice drawn from his own student days.
In a post on X, Sandhu encouraged the aspirants to remain positive, consistent and disciplined, and to treat setbacks as opportunities to learn and progress.
Responding to the high demand for the library, the Lieutenant Governor said an additional floor would be utilised to expand the facility and create more than 40 extra seats.
The visit followed a meeting chaired by Sandhu on Wednesday with principals of women’s colleges affiliated with Delhi University, Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh and senior officials from Delhi Police and other departments to discuss student safety around campuses and transit routes.
College representatives raised concerns about e-rickshaws, inadequate last-mile connectivity, encroached footpaths, unregulated vending, poorly lit areas, unsafe parks and insufficient public toilets, among other issues.
Following the meeting, Sandhu directed authorities to improve street lighting, strengthen CCTV coverage and police patrolling, and establish dedicated Nodal Police Officers and Pink Booths near college campuses.
The meeting came after Sandhu’s visits to Daulat Ram College and Indraprastha College and a surprise inspection of Bonta Park on September 25, aimed at assessing safety concerns faced by women students and local residents.
