Eight students from a Pune-based school drowned after venturing into the sea during a picnic at Diveagar beach in Maharashtra’s Raigad district on Thursday, officials said.
According to officials, a group of 48 people, including 25 boys, 17 girls and six teachers from Winners Academy for 11th and 12th in the Alandi area of Pune, had visited Dighi-Sagari beach in Diveagar for an excursion on Thursday evening.
During the visit, eight students entered the sea and were swept away after apparently misjudging the water’s depth and the strength of the current.
Bhau Salunkhe, owner of Bhau Maruti Salunkhe Mahakali Water Sports in Diveagar, and his team immediately launched a rescue operation. According to a media report, the team members risked their lives to retrieve the bodies of all eight students from the sea.
After receiving information about the incident, Assistant Police Inspector Santosh Awati of Dighi Sagari Borli Panchatan Police Station rushed to the spot with a police team.
With the assistance of local villagers, police took custody of the bodies and sent them to the Primary Health Centre in Borli Panchatan for post-mortem examinations.
The deceased have been identified as Tanmay Dattatray Vahile, Sumit Bharat Ahire, Pranav Ramdas Bansode, Kaivalya Satish Vasankar, Rajveer Yuvraj Vahile, Yash Kiran Wankhede, Soham Tukaram Bhandwalkar and Kaustubh Sandeep Daund.
Officials confirmed that all eight students were 16 years old and residents of Alandi in Pune. Further proceedings in the case are underway.
The tragedy comes days after a similar incident in Jharkhand, where three young children drowned in a village pond in Chegayadih, within the jurisdiction of Jamtara Sadar police station.
The children had reportedly gone out to play together in the afternoon and later reached a pond in the Chirkutola area. According to local residents, they drowned while playing in the water.
Villagers rushed to the spot after learning about the incident and pulled the children out of the pond. However, all three had died by then.
