Megastar Amitabh Bachchan took a nostalgic trip down memory lane on Kaun Banega Crorepati, recalling his years in Kolkata and the city’s iconic Park Street, including its legendary restaurants and live-music culture.
The conversation unfolded during contestant Shourjya Das’ appearance on the quiz reality show, when Bachchan spoke about the evenings he spent in Kolkata while working in the city during the 1960s.
Describing Park Street as a hub of nightlife and entertainment, Bachchan recalled the concentration of restaurants along the road and the vibrant atmosphere they created.
“Hamara raat ka entertainment yahi hota tha. Us saare ke saare Park Street mein ek line se lagi hui hain jitne bhi restaurant hain,” he said, recalling how the restaurants became a key part of his evening routine.
He also praised the unique character of Park Street, saying he had not seen a similar concentration of quality restaurants elsewhere in the world. Bachchan fondly remembered the musicians who performed at the popular venues, including veteran singer Usha Uthup and composer-musician Louis Banks.
Uthup has a particularly strong association with Park Street. She began her professional singing career at a restaurant there in 1969 after moving to Kolkata and later became one of the most recognisable voices of the city’s live-music scene.
The singer has previously spoken about choosing to perform in traditional sarees at a time when Western music dominated nightclub stages. She has also recalled some of the prominent personalities who attended her performances, including Bachchan, filmmaker Satyajit Ray, actor Uttam Kumar and actress Sharmila Tagore.
Bachchan also reminisced about Kolkata’s food culture during the conversation, fondly mentioning Nizam’s kebabs, rolls and other culinary favourites associated with the city.
