Chandigarh, October 1, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

A seven-member Coordination Committee constituted by the Punjab Government will meet in Chandigarh on October 6 at 12 noon to deliberate on the provisions of the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026, and consider suggestions received from Sri Akal Takht Sahib.

According to a Punjab Government statement, the committee will discuss various aspects of the legislation, with a focus on respecting its underlying spirit and sanctity while considering the views and suggestions submitted for review.

The committee will also discuss arrangements for effective coordination with the committee constituted by Sri Akal Takht Sahib to examine the provisions of the Act. The government said the meeting is intended to facilitate constructive dialogue and ensure that relevant suggestions and viewpoints are considered.

The seven-member committee comprises former Sri Akal Takht Sahib Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh, Damdami Taksal head Sant Giani Harnam Singh Khalsa, Sant Baba Sewa Singh Rampur Kheda, Justice (Retd.) Jaspal Singh, Justice (Retd.) Gurbir Singh, Jatinder Singh Aulakh, IPS (Retd.), and Law Officer Preet Inder Paul Singh.

The government said the committee would comprehensively examine the matter and discuss the way forward in consultation and coordination with the concerned stakeholders.

The meeting follows a detailed discussion held on Sunday between Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and the high-level committee regarding coordination with the panel constituted by Sri Akal Takht Sahib to review the amendments and offer suggestions on the legislation.

During that meeting, Mann emphasised that while discussions and efforts were being made to build consensus with the panel constituted by Sri Akal Takht Sahib, the spirit of the law must not be compromised.

The Chief Minister said provisions prescribing life imprisonment and heavy fines for those responsible for Beadbi—the desecration of the Guru Granth Sahib—formed the core of the legislation and should not be weakened.

Mann also said the law had provided solace to the hurt sentiments of the Sikh Sangat, which had been distressed by recurring incidents of Beadbi.

He reiterated that consultations with the panel constituted by Sri Akal Takht Sahib would continue in a constructive manner, while safeguarding the core purpose and spirit of the legislation.
