The 44th India Day Parade in New York celebrated India’s rich cultural diversity, the contributions of the Indian diaspora and the spirit of unity under the theme “Harmony in Heritage”.
Held on Sunday along Madison Avenue, the parade drew an estimated 200,000 people, with participants marching and crowds lining the streets, many waving the Tricolour during the celebration of India’s Independence.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul led the parade and said she was honoured to celebrate the “rich culture this vibrant community brings to New York”.
Actors Pooja Hegde and Adivi Sesh, who served as chief guests, travelled on floats and were greeted enthusiastically by fans along the route.
Organised annually by the Federation of Indian Associations, the parade has grown into the world’s largest Indian Independence Day celebration in terms of participation, attracting both organised groups and large numbers of people who join spontaneously.
Avinash Gupta, one of the organisers, said the event had continued to grow each year while highlighting the contribution of the Indian diaspora to New York, the United States and the wider world.
This year’s celebration was particularly significant as it coincides with milestones in the histories of India and the US. India is marking its 80th year of independence, while the US is celebrating its 250th anniversary of independence. Both countries share a history of struggle against British colonial rule.
The parade featured 36 floats showcasing India’s religious and cultural diversity, along with representations from Indian-American businesses, media organisations and non-governmental organisations.
Dancers performed along the route, while bands representing the New York Police Department, schools and cultural organisations added to the festivities with a mix of Western marching music and Indian melodies.
The celebrations continued after the parade with music and dance performances. A nearby street festival also added to the festive atmosphere, with Indian cuisine and aromas filling the area.
The annual event has emerged as a major platform for the Indian-American community to celebrate its heritage while showcasing the country’s cultural diversity to a global audience in New York.
