A 35-year-old police constable allegedly died by suicide at his residence in Hyderabad while on a video call with a woman late on Sunday night, police said.
The deceased, identified as Muthe Chandrasekhar, was working as a writer at Malakpet Police Station. He was reportedly on a video call with a woman at his residence in Shalivahana Nagar in the Moosaram Bagh area when he told her that he intended to die by suicide.
The woman immediately alerted Chaitanyapuri Police, who informed Malakpet Police. A police team rushed to the residence, but Chandrasekhar had already died by suicide.
Police shifted the body to Osmania General Hospital for a postmortem examination.
Investigators are probing Chandrasekhar’s relationship with the woman and examining the circumstances that may have led to his death.
The incident comes amid concerns over a series of suicides involving police personnel in Telangana.
On World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10, Telangana Director General of Police C.V. Anand had appealed to the state’s 93,000 police personnel not to consider suicide as a solution to financial or personal problems.
The DGP had also urged police personnel to stay away from alcohol, drugs, marijuana, online betting and other social vices. He appealed to them to share their difficulties with family members and colleagues and seek timely assistance.
According to the police chief, debt arising from online betting had emerged as one of the primary factors in suicides among police personnel reported over the previous four months.
Anand said cases had involved young and middle-aged constables who had reportedly sold land, borrowed money from friends and colleagues or taken high-interest loans after accumulating betting-related debts.
He urged personnel facing financial difficulties to seek help and avoid betting, while stressing the impact of suicide on spouses, children and parents who depend on them.
