India on Wednesday rejected references to the country in the Joint Communique of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation’s (OIC) Contact Group on Jammu and Kashmir, describing them as “unwarranted and factually incorrect” and asserting that the grouping has no locus standi to comment on India’s internal matters.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are an “integral and inalienable” part of India, adding that politically motivated assertions cannot alter that position.
“India categorically rejects the unwarranted and factually incorrect references to India in the Joint Communique of the so-called OIC Contact Group on Jammu and Kashmir. The OIC has no locus standi to pronounce on matters that are strictly internal to India,” the MEA said.
The ministry further said that repeated endorsement of what it described as “motivated narratives” raises questions about the credibility of the OIC.
The MEA also advised the OIC to address Pakistan’s record on terrorism rather than provide it a platform to raise what India described as “fabricated and motivated propaganda”.
“Instead of offering a platform to Pakistan to peddle its fabricated and motivated propaganda, OIC will be better advised to counsel Pakistan, which has a well-documented record of supporting and sponsoring terrorism, to look inwards and address the continuing threat of terrorism emanating from territories under its control,” it said.
India had similarly rejected references to Jammu and Kashmir made by the OIC at the Human Rights Council in June, calling Pakistan’s allegations “baseless and malicious”.
At the 62nd session of the Human Rights Council, Anupama Singh, First Secretary at India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, said India rejected the allegations made by Pakistan and the references to Jammu and Kashmir by the OIC.
She accused Pakistan of using propaganda to divert attention from its domestic issues and alleged that its role as OIC coordinator was being misused.
Singh reiterated India’s position that Jammu and Kashmir is an “integral and inalienable” part of the country. She also said the issue of Pakistan’s occupation of Indian territory remained the unresolved matter from India’s perspective.
On Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, Singh attributed unrest there to what she described as decades of repression, military control and denial of fundamental rights. She also accused Pakistan of pursuing terrorism as state policy while portraying itself as a victim of terrorism.
