BJP National President Nitin Nabin will lead a foot march titled ‘Save Democracy, Remove Anarchy’ in Delhi’s Chandni Chowk on Wednesday as the party prepares a nationwide campaign to counter Opposition protests over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Delhi BJP President Harsh Malhotra, MPs and other senior party leaders are also expected to participate in the march.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has planned similar foot marches across the country on Wednesday. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and chief ministers of BJP-ruled states are expected to take part in programmes in their respective regions.
The campaign is intended to mobilise party workers and supporters while presenting the BJP’s position on the electoral roll revision exercise. It comes amid a political confrontation over the SIR, with Opposition parties alleging irregularities and questioning the functioning of the Election Commission of India.
The BJP’s planned mobilisation also comes ahead of the INDIA bloc’s proposed ‘Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao’ rally in Delhi on November 1. The Opposition alliance has announced the rally to protest against alleged irregularities in the electoral roll revision process and has demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over what it describes as failures to address concerns about alleged “vote chori”.
In response, the BJP is preparing a month-long counter-campaign beginning November 1, with synchronised padyatras planned across the country. Senior party leaders, Union Ministers and chief ministers of BJP-governed states are expected to participate in these programmes to engage with the public and strengthen the party’s outreach.
Delhi Police had earlier issued a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) covering security and traffic coordination for the Chandni Chowk event from October 25 to November 3.
The parallel campaigns are expected to intensify the political contest between the BJP and the INDIA bloc over electoral processes and allegations concerning the integrity of voter rolls.
