New Delhi, October 30, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The BJP and the Opposition INDIA Bloc traded sharp accusations on Friday over the bloc’s plan to hold a “public impeachment” of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, with the ruling party dismissing the exercise as political theatre and the Opposition defending it as a response to alleged erosion of democratic institutions.

The programme was scheduled for 3.30 pm at the residence of Congress president and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, amid the INDIA Bloc’s continuing confrontation with the Election Commission of India (ECI).

BJP MP Yogender Chandolia said the Opposition should raise its concerns in Parliament rather than organise what he called a mock parliamentary exercise. He accused Congress and its allies of disrupting parliamentary proceedings while choosing to hold a separate session at Kharge’s residence.

BJP MP Sanjay Jaiswal also questioned the Opposition’s decision, arguing that its leaders avoided parliamentary debate because they would have to respond to counter-arguments. BJP leader Ram Kadam said impeachment was a serious constitutional procedure and should not be turned into a political tool. He advised the Opposition to approach the judiciary or submit evidence to the Election Commission if it had grievances.

Congress leader Udit Raj defended the proposed programme, describing it as an effort to inform the public about what he alleged was the weakening of Parliament and democratic institutions. He also claimed that the BJP’s reported plan to organise counter-programmes at nearly 800 locations showed that the ruling party was under pressure.

Congress MP Imran Pratapgarhi accused the BJP of undermining constitutional principles and alleged that electoral victories were being secured through “vote theft”. He said the INDIA Bloc remained united under Rahul Gandhi’s leadership and would go ahead with the programme. He also referred to a proposed rally in Delhi on November 1.

CPI(M) MP John Brittas said the initiative reflected public concerns over the independence of constitutional institutions. He alleged that elections were not free and fair and that notices seeking action against the CEC had not been entertained by the Lok Sabha Speaker or Rajya Sabha Chairman.

Brittas further questioned Kumar’s moral authority and said he expected the CEC to resign. These allegations and demands were rejected by BJP leaders, who maintained that the Opposition should use established parliamentary and legal channels to raise its concerns.
