A day after going unsold at the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2027 auction, Delhi batter Tanisha Singh produced a record-breaking performance, smashing 119 off just 47 balls to guide her team to the highest-ever total by a women’s side in domestic T20 cricket.
Tanisha reached her century in 38 deliveries during Delhi’s Senior Women’s T20 Trophy match against Hyderabad at the MCA Ground 2 in Pune on Thursday. Her knock, which included 25 fours and a six, powered Delhi to 262/6 and helped them defeat Hyderabad by 108 runs.
The 38-ball hundred is the joint third-fastest in women’s T20 cricket, alongside West Indies batter Deandra Dottin’s century against South Africa in 2010. Only Kiran Navgire’s 34-ball hundred and Sophie Devine’s 36-ball effort have been quicker.
“I just thought that I have to bat with good intent, play aggressively and dominate. I could feel that intuition. I was just looking at the ball and hitting it everywhere,” Tanisha said after the match.
She added 160 runs for the second wicket with India batter Priya Punia, who scored 59 off 28 balls. The pair barely spoke during their partnership, communicating through fist bumps and bat touches as they attacked the Hyderabad bowling.
Tanisha said the team had planned to score at least 50 runs in the powerplay, but their aggressive approach took Delhi to 93/1 in the first six overs. The previous highest total in women’s domestic T20 cricket was Goa’s 257/2 against Arunachal Pradesh in the 2019-20 season.
Hyderabad managed 154/8 in reply, with G Trisha scoring 80 off 52 balls. Delhi secured a 108-run victory.
The innings was particularly significant for Tanisha, as it was her first T20 century and came after she had been dismissed for a duck in her previous match. She said she had learnt to accept both setbacks and achievements without allowing either to affect her mindset.
The batter credited her coaches, including Dishant Yagnik, Surjeet and Ajay Verma, for helping her develop her skills. She also said her India A tour of England and subsequent matches against Australia A had taught her the importance of discipline, routine and observing senior players.
Tanisha acknowledged that going unsold at the WPL auction after several years of trying had been disappointing. She credited her family, friends, coaches and physiotherapist Surya for helping her regain her composure.
“My main aim is not WPL; it is to play for India,” she said, adding that she remained hopeful of earning a place in the senior national team.
Delhi, who won the senior women’s one-day trophy last season, are now targeting their first senior women’s T20 title.
