Actress Saumya Uniyal has described playing Charu in the series Matargashti as a special opportunity, saying the role closely matched something she had once written down as a career wish in her diary.
Speaking about her character, Uniyal said Charu could easily be misunderstood by people who judged her only on the surface. She described her as a warm, caring and fiercely protective friend who expresses her emotions openly.
“Charu is also someone who’s very protective as a friend and wears her heart on her sleeve. One thing about her that I wish I had in me was the confidence and fierceness with which she carries herself,” the actress said.
Recalling how she had hoped to book a series, Uniyal said she had written detailed notes in her diary about the kind of project and role she wanted, including the length of the episodes.
“I actually had a diary where I had written that I wanted to book a series. I wrote in detail, and surprisingly, that was the only point I wrote about in detail. It mentions what kind of role it would be, what the length of the episodes would be, etc. So, in a way, I guess I manifested this,” she said.
The actress also praised veteran actor Rajesh Sharma, saying she had admired his work for years and appreciated his ability to transform himself into different characters.
Speaking about her equation with co-star Adrija Sinha, Uniyal said they bonded during costume trials and grew closer while shooting the series. She described Sinha as a younger sister and said their off-screen friendship helped create the chemistry between Dhara and Charu on screen.
Matargashti explores relationships, generational differences and personal independence. Uniyal said the themes did not require any specific preparation because they reflected experiences and social realities familiar from her own childhood, including the first experience of attraction and the desire for independence.
The series premiered on Netflix on October 21.
