At least eight people were killed and four others injured after an oxygen cylinder exploded inside an ambulance in Pakistan’s Sindh province on Wednesday night, while a separate gas bowser collision in the province claimed two lives and left five people critically injured.
The ambulance explosion occurred in Nagarparkar city in Tharparkar district, police said. The vehicle was reportedly parked at a health facility when the blast took place.
The injured were shifted to Karachi after receiving initial medical treatment, while the bodies were taken to a local hospital for identification, officials said.
Specialist teams from Mirpurkhas and Karachi have been called in to examine the evidence and determine the cause of the explosion.
In the separate incident, two people were killed and five others injured when a gas bowser collided with another heavy vehicle on the National Highway near Rohri Interchange in Sukkur district.
According to preliminary reports, the collision ruptured the bowser’s pressurised tank, triggering a powerful explosion and fire that spread to nearby vehicles.
The two fatalities were identified as the bowser’s driver and cleaner, who died at the scene. Rescue teams rushed to the site and shifted the injured, many of whom suffered burns and other trauma injuries, to a medical facility in Sukkur. Several were reported to be in critical condition.
The blast and ensuing fire also damaged or destroyed six other vehicles, including two fuel tankers, three heavy cargo trailers and a commercial Mazda truck.
Authorities are investigating both incidents to establish the circumstances and causes of the explosions.
