The Supreme Court on Friday directed Mokama MLA Anant Singh to surrender before the authorities by December 1 in connection with the murder of Dularchand Yadav during the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections. The court also gave Bihar Police four months to complete the investigation.

A Bench of Justices M.M. Sundresh and Prasanna B. Varale passed the directions while hearing a petition filed by Niraj Kumar, the deceased’s grandson, challenging the Patna High Court’s March 19 order granting bail to Singh.

The petitioner questioned the bail decision, arguing that Singh’s criminal antecedents had not been adequately considered. During an earlier hearing on July 13, the Supreme Court had issued notice after the petitioner’s counsel alleged that Singh had not fully disclosed his 67 criminal antecedents.

The matter was listed on September 29 but deferred to October 30 after Singh’s counsel sought time to file a counter-affidavit. The court had indicated that no further adjournment would be granted.

The case concerns the death of Dularchand Yadav, a Jan Suraaj Party supporter and former RJD leader, on October 30, 2025, in Basawanchak village under Ghoswari police station limits in Mokama.

According to the police investigation, an SUV allegedly ran over Yadav, killing him at the spot. His family, however, claimed that he was shot before being run over. Police identified Singh as the prime accused and arrested him on November 1, 2025. Two of his nephews were also arrested.

Singh was remanded to judicial custody on November 2. After his earlier bail pleas were rejected by the MP-MLA court, the Patna High Court granted him bail. He subsequently contested and won the Mokama Assembly election while in jail.

Separately, the JD(U) expelled Singh and his wife, former MLA Neelam Devi, for six years over alleged anti-party activities. The party has also approached the Bihar Assembly Speaker seeking action against Singh under the anti-defection provisions of the Constitution’s Tenth Schedule.
