Akhilesh Yadav questions delay in discussion on Delhi students’ protest

New Delhi, August 11, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Samajwadi Party MP Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday questioned the government’s decision to take up a discussion on the Delhi students’ protest only towards the end of Parliament’s Monsoon Session, alleging that the NDA was reluctant to debate the issue.

Speaking outside Parliament, Yadav said the Opposition wanted a comprehensive discussion on the students’ protest as well as issues related to the Ram Mandir donation matter, which he described as interconnected.

“These issues are interconnected. One can say they are two sides of the same coin,” Yadav said, alleging links between the BJP, people he described as underground and unregistered, and the Ram Mandir-related issues.

He questioned why the discussion had not been scheduled earlier. “This discussion could have taken place a week ago. Why wasn’t it done earlier? Because they do not want a discussion,” he said.

Yadav also alleged that the ruling party was reluctant to allow the Ram Mandir donation issue to be discussed in the House. He said the Opposition would raise the name of Lord Ram when the matter came up and accused the BJP and those responsible for beating protesting students of wanting to avoid such a debate.

“Remember, when God punishes you, it will not make any sound,” Yadav said.

The remarks came amid repeated disruptions in the Lok Sabha. Speaker Om Birla adjourned the House until 2 p.m. on Tuesday following heavy sloganeering by Opposition members during Question Hour. He urged both Treasury and Opposition benches to maintain decorum and said disruptions were against the spirit of democracy.

Birla also noted that the government had assured the House that Union Home Minister Amit Shah was ready to discuss the students’ protest.

Earlier, BJP-led NDA MPs had marched towards Makar Dwar carrying posters accusing Congress leader and Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi of avoiding the proposed discussion. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju had said on Monday that Shah would make a statement on the issue and urged the Opposition to participate in the discussion.
