Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has hinted at a significant shift within the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab, stating that he would like to be replaced by a “full-time” state president for the party.
Mann, who has held the dual role of Chief Minister and AAP’s Punjab State President since 2017, suggested that a dedicated state leader is essential to strengthen the party’s organizational framework in Punjab.
Bhagwant Mann’s Proposal for Leadership Change
Mann, speaking at a campaign event for AAP candidate Ishan Chabbewal in the Chabbewal by-election, expressed his desire to focus exclusively on his duties as Chief Minister, which currently include overseeing 14 departments.
With responsibilities spanning governance for Punjab’s 3.5 crore citizens, Mann indicated that a full time president of state unit could concentrate on strengthening AAP’s reach and grasroot connections in the state.
“A full-time state president could streamline the functioning of the government while also dedicating necessary attention to the party’s organizational needs,” Mann stated, acknowledging that AAP needs an individual who can be fully committed to the role.
Seven Years of Leadership and Transitioning to a New Model
Since 2017, Mann has been AAP’s state president, guiding the party through critical elections and changes within Punjab’s political landscape. Despite the temporary appointment of Principal Budh Ram as working president, Mann believes a long-term leader is necessary to strengthen AAP’s foundation in Punjab.
Mann’s comments suggest he is ready to step back from his party responsibilities to focus solely on his duties as Chief Minister, maintaining that such a change would enhance both party and governmental operations. “To streamline governance and strengthen the party, I feel that a full-time state president is essential for managing party functions,” Mann remarked.
Speculation Surrounding the Next AAP State President in Punjab
As Mann indicated his desire for new leadership, speculation has grown about his potential successor. Given Mann’s Jat Sikh background, many observers expect AAP may choose a leader from the Hindu or Dalit communities, expanding the party’s inclusivity. Unofficial sources suggest a Hindu candidate is currently the frontrunner, positioning AAP to appeal to a broader demographic within Punjab.
This potential shift aligns with AAP’s long-term strategy to diversify leadership representation in key roles, making the party more reflective of Punjab’s social and cultural landscape.

Sources say that a decision on this potential leadership transition could be taken soon. However, the final call will only be made following a meeting between party supremo and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann.
