The Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Chandigarh unit on Monday criticised Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit to the city, alleging that it was limited to making “grand promises” ahead of the Municipal Corporation elections, without addressing residents’ long-pending problems.
AAP city president Vijaypal Singh, along with councillors Anju Katyal and Deepa Dubey, said residents had expected concrete decisions on housing board flats, ownership rights, Lal Dora and leasehold properties, and rehabilitation colonies. However, they alleged that no clear solutions or timelines were announced.
Vijaypal questioned why residents were still waiting for ownership rights to housing board flats, recalling that former Chandigarh MP Kirron Kher had said in 2019 that the Centre and the Union Home Ministry had approved the proposal. He alleged that the BJP had revived the issue only because civic elections were approaching.
The AAP leader also questioned the implementation of the 24-hour water supply project in Manimajra, citing an expenditure of around Rs 1,400 crore. He claimed that residents continued to face problems with water availability and quality despite the publicity surrounding the project.
The AAP leaders also raised concerns over the possible removal of a colony near Dhanas, asking why residents faced displacement without prior arrangements for rehabilitation or alternative accommodation. They said the possibility of families becoming homeless during the festive season and the onset of winter was particularly worrying.
