Jamia Millia Islamia has extended online classes until November 24 and shifted all odd-semester practical and theory examinations to virtual mode, citing an campus situation it said was not conducive to a normal academic environment.
In an order issued on Wednesday, the university said online teaching for the odd semester would conclude on November 24. Practical examinations, fieldwork assessments, project vivas and minor project vivas will be conducted online from November 25 to 30, while theory examinations will take place virtually from December 1 to 24.
The university has also announced winter vacation from December 25, 2026, to January 12, 2027. Classes for the even semester are scheduled to begin on January 13.
The decision comes amid ongoing student protests at the university. Students have been on hunger strike since October 12, demanding restoration of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union and removal of the university’s Chief Proctor over what they have described as a crackdown on protesters. Classes were shifted online on October 24 as a precautionary measure.
According to the university’s statement, a meeting of Deans, Heads, Directors and other officials was held on Wednesday to review the campus situation. Following discussions, the authorities concluded that conditions were not suitable for regular academic activities.
The university has directed academic departments to ensure compliance with the order and make arrangements for online classes and examinations. Officials have also been asked to maintain attendance and other student records.
Earlier on Wednesday, JMI expressed shock and concern over incidents of vandalism and damage to university property reported the previous night.
