The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) has apologised to Chief Justice of India Surya Kant over a controversial post published on the official X account of the Kerala Congress unit, maintaining that the remarks were unauthorised and did not reflect the party’s official position.
KPCC president Sunny Joseph conveyed the apology in a reply to a legal notice issued by a Supreme Court lawyer. Joseph, who is also Kerala’s Power Minister, said the post had been published without authorisation and that the person responsible, identified in the reply as Vijay Thottathil, had been removed from the position.
The controversy erupted after the Congress unit’s official X account carried a post targeting the Chief Justice amid an INDIA bloc protest in New Delhi. The opposition alliance had organised a march to the Supreme Court as part of its demand for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The post reportedly expressed anger over the Chief Justice’s position that he could not meet INDIA bloc leaders because of legal issues. It carried the provocative line: “Surya Kant, resign. We will find a replacement for you.”
The post was subsequently withdrawn, but its content triggered political and legal controversy because it was directed at the head of India’s judiciary.
In his response to the legal notice, Joseph sought to distance the state Congress leadership from the remarks, stating that they did not represent the party’s official stand. The removal of the person responsible was also cited as part of the action taken over the incident.
The episode diverted attention from the opposition alliance’s campaign against the Chief Election Commissioner and placed the Kerala Congress unit under scrutiny over its social media conduct.
The KPCC’s response has now formally conveyed its regret to the Chief Justice while maintaining that the controversial post was unauthorised.
