Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said the true success of science lies in translating laboratory innovations into practical solutions that improve people’s lives. He emphasised that India views science and technology as instruments for serving humanity rather than tools of power or conflict.
Addressing the Emerging Science, Technology and Innovation Conclave (ESTIC) 2026 in the national capital, Modi said that although technology-driven sectors have different requirements, they collectively reflect India’s growing technological capabilities and commitment to self-reliance.
“There has been a persistent challenge in how science and technology are viewed, often seen merely as tools of power or conflict. However, India firmly believes that science and technology are instruments for serving humanity,” the Prime Minister said.
“The true success of science is realised when it moves from the lab to the land, directly improving the lives of ordinary citizens,” he added.
Emphasising the societal importance of innovation, Modi said scientific and technological progress should not be judged solely by sophistication or advancement. Instead, its real value lies in its ability to address practical challenges and bring meaningful improvements to people’s lives.
“The success of a technology is not determined solely by how advanced it is. Its true strength lies in how effectively it solves major problems and how many people’s lives it transforms,” he said.
Highlighting India’s long scientific tradition, the Prime Minister pointed to the country’s contributions to knowledge and discovery, including the concept of zero, the development of the number system and advances in astronomy.
Modi said research plays a crucial role in strengthening a country’s technological capabilities and enabling it to develop solutions to its own challenges.
“India is moving forward by evaluating itself against this very benchmark. We all know that a country’s technology and its ability to create technology depend on its research. Research is the force that enables a country to find solutions to its problems and become self-reliant in critical technologies,” he said.
His remarks underscored the importance of connecting scientific research with real-world applications, while positioning innovation as a means of improving public welfare and strengthening India’s technological self-reliance.
