A 13-year-old schoolgirl was allegedly abducted, drugged and gang-raped at a hotel in Bandel, Hooghly district, after being lured from Birati in North 24 Parganas, police said on Tuesday. The accused allegedly recorded the assault and later sent the video to the victim’s family to demand ransom and threaten them against pursuing legal action.
The incident came to light after the girl’s family lodged a complaint at Baguiati Police Station in Kolkata on Tuesday, prompting an investigation into the alleged abduction, sexual assault and extortion.
According to the complaint and police sources, the girl, a resident of Baguiati, left home at around 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 24, saying she was going to meet a friend in Birati, North 24 Parganas. She was allegedly abducted from the area and taken to a hotel in Bandel, where she was forced to consume a cold drink suspected to have been laced with a narcotic substance before being sexually assaulted by multiple individuals.
When the girl failed to return home that evening, her mother tried contacting her at around 8:30 p.m. The girl initially said she was in Barrackpore with a friend and would return by 11 p.m. However, subsequent calls went unanswered.
Later that night, the mother received a call from an unidentified man who claimed he had found the girl crying on the street and had allowed her to use his mobile phone before abruptly ending the call.
At 12:06 a.m. on Sunday, the girl reportedly sent her mother a message saying she was in danger and that a friend had taken her to the house of a person identified as “Rik”. Shortly afterwards, another individual, identified as Debjit Sarkar, called the mother and assured her that the girl was safe and would be sent home by car.
The girl returned home at around 10:30 a.m. on Sunday in a distressed condition. According to the complaint, she subsequently told her family that she had been taken to an acquaintance’s house, drugged until she lost consciousness, physically tortured and sexually assaulted by several individuals. She also alleged that she had been forced to take emergency contraceptive pills.
The family’s ordeal reportedly continued when the accused allegedly sent a recorded video of the assault to the girl’s mother and demanded ransom, while threatening the family against approaching the police.
The mother named several individuals in her complaint, including a female friend of the girl. Police have registered a case under relevant legal provisions relating to abduction, gang rape, extortion and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
No arrests or detentions had been reported at the time of filing this report. Police said efforts were underway to identify, trace and apprehend those allegedly involved in the crime.
