The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected self-styled godman Asaram’s plea seeking an extension of his medical parole and directed him to surrender by 5 p.m. upon the expiry of his existing parole period. The court also directed the Rajasthan government to ensure that his medical needs were adequately addressed.
Asaram is serving a life sentence in Central Jail, Jodhpur, following his conviction in a 2013 rape case involving a minor girl in Rajasthan. He was convicted by a special court under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for raping the teenage devotee at his ashram.
The Rajasthan High Court had granted Asaram 20 days of parole on October 6. His counsel subsequently approached the Supreme Court, seeking an extension on medical grounds, stating that he was undergoing treatment at the Government Dhanwantari Ayurvedic Hospital in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh.
His counsel argued that the treatment was ongoing and requested additional time for medical reasons. However, the Supreme Court declined to extend the parole period and directed him to surrender by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, October 27.
The court also directed the Rajasthan government to ensure that Asaram received appropriate medical care.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has scheduled a hearing on Asaram’s appeal against his conviction for November 6 at 2 p.m. The court directed its Registry to summon the trial court records, in both physical and digital formats, for consideration during the proceedings.
In a separate development, the Gujarat High Court had earlier rejected an interim bail plea filed by Asaram, who had sought 20 days of temporary release on humanitarian grounds to meet his 83-year-old wife, who is undergoing treatment at a hospital. The court, however, permitted him to seek approval to speak with her through video conferencing.
Asaram was also convicted by a trial court in Gujarat in a separate 2013 case involving the rape of a woman disciple at his Surat ashram.
