Indian benchmark indices ended higher on Monday after a volatile trading session, supported by strong gains in metal, pharmaceutical and healthcare stocks. The broader market also staged a robust recovery from intraday lows, reflecting improved investor sentiment.
The BSE Sensex climbed 482 points, or 0.66 per cent, to close at 73,606.75, while the NSE Nifty advanced 0.68 per cent to settle at 22,753.20.
Market experts said the Nifty’s technical outlook improved after the index closed above its 20-day Simple Moving Average (SMA) and reclaimed its 200-week SMA.
“The PCR rose to 1.12, indicating better downside positioning, but India VIX at 17.12 shows that traders continue to expect wide market swings,” analysts said.
Market watchers noted that holding above 22,600 could support a further move towards 22,800–22,900. However, they said a sustained close above 22,800 would be necessary to strengthen the upward momentum.
Among the leading gainers on the Nifty were Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, JSW Steel, BSE Limited and Adani Ports. Shriram Finance, Tata Consumer Products, Bajaj Finance and HDFC Life Insurance were among the major laggards.
Sectorally, metal stocks led the gains, with the Nifty Metal index rising 2.2 per cent. The Nifty Pharma index advanced 1.67 per cent, while the Nifty Healthcare index also recorded healthy gains. In contrast, the Nifty Media and Nifty Consumer Durables indices were the worst-performing sectoral indices.
The broader market also reflected the positive trend, as investors returned to mid-cap and small-cap stocks following weakness in early trade. The Nifty Midcap 100 index gained 1.19 per cent, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 advanced 1.38 per cent by the close.
Among the 30 Sensex constituents, Adani Ports, Eternal, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Trent, Tata Steel and Bharti Airtel emerged as the leading performers. Bajaj Finance, HDFC Bank, Maruti Suzuki, HCL Technologies and Power Grid Corporation were among the stocks that weighed on the index.
Experts said that despite intermittent volatility during the session, gains in metal and healthcare-related stocks helped the benchmark indices close firmly in positive territory. The recovery across mid-cap and small-cap stocks further indicated an improvement in overall market sentiment.
