India T20I captain Shreyas Iyer has emphasised that he does not want to be restricted by a fixed batting template, saying his approach will depend on the match situation as India prepare for the next ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
Speaking ahead of the five-match T20I series against the West Indies, Iyer said he intends to rely on his natural attacking instincts while also taking responsibility for building a strong platform for the batters who follow him.
The Mumbai batter explained that he looks to capitalise on fielding restrictions during the powerplay and put pressure on the opposition, while adapting his role as the innings progresses.
“I love to play the situation. If I’m going into bat in the powerplay, I want to capitalise on the field restrictions which you have in the powerplay. So, I am someone who likes to go against the bowlers when the chips are down, because that’s when the offensive game comes in,” Iyer told JioStar.

He added that this mindset had been part of his approach since his early days playing for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy. Once settled at the crease, he aims to provide a platform for the incoming batters and maintain pressure on the bowling attack.
“Once I get in, I see to it that I create a platform for the batters coming after me. And if I keep continuing, then I know I can take down the bowlers left, right, and centre,” he said.
Iyer also highlighted the importance of reading the field and understanding the opposition’s tactics before deciding how to approach an innings.
He said bowlers often begin aggressively in an attempt to take wickets, particularly in the one-day format, and he looks to use that aggression to shift momentum in his favour.
“I check around the field and see what kind of tactics they are plotting against me. Sometimes bowlers, they love to bluff and they like to get on top of you,” he said.
Iyer added that his focus is on responding to the ball and the field, while using his awareness of the game to influence the situation and control the momentum.
