The Communist Party of India (Marxist), the leading party of the West Bengal Left Front, has appealed for online donations to support its campaign for the upcoming Assembly by-elections in Nandigram and Rejinagar.
CPI(M) Politburo member and state secretary Md Salim shared the appeal on social media along with a QR code through which supporters can contribute to the party’s election fund.
The bypolls in Nandigram in East Midnapore district and Rejinagar in Murshidabad district are scheduled for October 6, with counting set for October 9.
The fundraising appeal comes amid differences within the Left Front over the candidate selection in Rejinagar. While the Front has a unanimously accepted candidate, CPI’s Shanti Gopal Giri, in Nandigram, both the CPI(M) and the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) have fielded candidates in Rejinagar.
The CPI(M) selected Syed Asad Ali as the Front-nominated candidate for Rejinagar. The RSP subsequently fielded its own candidate, Bikash Chandra Mishra, in opposition to the decision.
Urging supporters to contribute, Salim said, “Help as much as you can by donating to the election fund for campaigning for the upcoming Rejinagar and Nandigram assembly by-elections.”
The CPI(M) had also sought online contributions through social media during the West Bengal Assembly elections earlier this year. The initiative was criticised by the ruling Trinamool Congress, which questioned the Left party’s use of online fundraising by referring to its opposition to computerisation in government offices during its 34-year rule in the state from 1977 to 2011.
CPI(M) leaders had rejected the criticism, saying that many Left-leaning voters who are not active party members nevertheless want to financially support the party during elections.
A state committee member said the online donation system was intended to make contributions easier for such supporters, adding that the party relies on support from ordinary people rather than electoral bonds.
