India will wear the official Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) jersey for their one-off T20 International against Japan on Tuesday, with the match marking 75 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries, according to sources.
The Shreyas Iyer-led Indian side will wear the BCCI colours for the match at the Sano International Cricket Ground rather than the Asian Games kit. The Asian Games cricket kit will be different, as was seen during the Indian women’s team’s campaign.
The match comes two days before the men’s cricket competition begins at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. India and Japan are among the 10 teams participating in the competition.
Tuesday’s fixture will be the first international cricket match between India and Japan and will serve as a special event to launch celebrations marking the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations.
The match is also being positioned as the flagship event for ‘Sport 75’, a wider bilateral initiative aimed at promoting sporting exchanges and cooperation between India and Japan. The initiative originates from an agreement reached at a summit between Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia described the fixture as an important moment for cricket and said it would take the Indian team into new territory while providing an opportunity to introduce the sport to a wider audience in Japan and East Asia.
“The BCCI is delighted to be part of this historic occasion as the Indian and Japanese men’s teams come together for a special T20 International in Japan. This is a significant moment for cricket, as it takes the Indian team to new territory and provides an opportunity to introduce the sport to a wider audience in Japan and East Asia,” Saikia said.
He also highlighted the longstanding relationship between India and Japan and thanked the Japan Cricket Association for helping facilitate the fixture.
