Four Border Security Force (BSF) troopers were injured on Saturday after the vehicle they were travelling in overturned on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district, officials said.
The accident occurred near Seri when the vehicle was travelling from Srinagar towards Jammu. According to officials, the driver lost control of the vehicle, following which it overturned on the road.
The four injured BSF personnel were shifted to a hospital for medical treatment.
“Investigation has been initiated and the circumstances leading to the accident are being verified,” officials said.
Road accidents in Jammu and Kashmir are attributed to a combination of human error, challenging mountainous terrain and deteriorating road infrastructure.
Overspeeding and dangerous overtaking, particularly on blind curves, remain major contributors to collisions. Officials also point to mobile phone use while driving or riding, wrong-side driving and failure to remain within designated lanes as significant risks.
Mountainous stretches in districts such as Ramban, Doda and Kishtwar feature narrow roads and steep gradients that require careful driving. Potholes, damaged road edges and inadequate safety infrastructure, including crash barriers, reflective markers and warning signs, can further increase the risk of accidents.
Seasonal factors also add to the challenges, with landslides, heavy rainfall and snowfall reducing visibility and making mountain roads slippery.
The growing number of vehicles in cities such as Srinagar and Jammu has also placed additional pressure on existing road and parking infrastructure.
Officials have also highlighted delays in emergency response as a factor that can worsen the consequences of highway accidents. Limited cellular connectivity and a shortage of advanced trauma care facilities along some major highway corridors can delay immediate medical intervention following accidents.
