President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday extended birthday greetings to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying that during his 25 years in public office as Chief Minister and Prime Minister, he had established several new benchmarks of good governance and given fresh momentum and direction to inclusive development.

In a post on social media platform X, President Murmu said, “Heartfelt birthday greetings and best wishes to the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji.”

She said that while advancing modern development with a sense of cultural pride, people across the country were witnessing harmony between heritage and development.

The President also wished PM Modi good health and a long life so that he could continue his work in public service and nation-building.

Born on September 17, 1950, in Vadnagar, Gujarat, Narendra Modi became the first Prime Minister of India to have been born after the country gained Independence in 1947.

He grew up in a modest family and helped at his family’s tea stall during his childhood. He joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) as a pracharak in Ahmedabad in 1972 and subsequently worked full-time in organisational activities.

During the Emergency of 1975-77, Modi participated in activities associated with the movement opposing the Emergency and seeking the restoration of democracy. He later completed a master’s degree in political science from Gujarat University.

Modi formally entered the BJP’s organisational structure in Gujarat in 1987 as the party’s General Secretary. Among his early major assignments was the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation election, where the BJP registered its first victory in the civic body.

He became a BJP national secretary in 1995 and was assigned responsibility for party affairs in Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. He later served as the BJP’s General Secretary (Organisation), one of the party’s senior organisational positions.

Modi played an organisational role in the BJP’s preparations for the 1998 Lok Sabha election, following which the BJP emerged as the largest constituent of the government formed under Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

He became Gujarat Chief Minister on October 7, 2001, and remained in the post for more than 12 years.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha election, Modi contested from Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh and Vadodara in Gujarat and won both seats. The BJP won 282 seats in the 2014 general election, securing a majority on its own.

Modi was sworn in as Prime Minister on May 26, 2014, with then President Pranab Mukherjee administering the oath at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

He retained the Varanasi seat in the 2019 Lok Sabha election, when the BJP won 303 seats. In the 2024 general election, Modi again won from Varanasi for a third consecutive term.

The BJP won 240 seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha election, below the 272-seat mark required for a majority on its own. Modi subsequently took oath as Prime Minister for a third consecutive term.
