A complaint has been filed against Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president B.K. Hariprasad over his recent remarks describing jailed activist Umar Khalid as a “nationalist” and questioning the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad’s (ABVP) authority to comment on him.

Hindu activist Tejas Gowda filed the complaint at the Vidhana Soudha police station in Bengaluru on Wednesday, alleging that Hariprasad’s remarks were objectionable and could contribute to hatred and social tensions. Gowda urged the police to register a criminal case against the Congress leader.

Speaking to reporters, Gowda alleged that Hariprasad had described Khalid as a “nationalist” inside the Vidhana Soudha premises and said the statement was objectionable. He also referred to Khalid’s arrest under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots case.

Gowda alleged that Hariprasad was “glorifying” Khalid and questioned the Congress party’s position on the matter. He said police officials had informed him that the complaint would be registered. He added that if an FIR was not filed, he would approach the court seeking directions for registration of a case.

The complaint follows Hariprasad’s remarks on Tuesday amid a controversy over a proposed screening of a documentary on Khalid at the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) in Bengaluru. The screening was postponed by the organisers, citing security and administrative reasons.

Defending his position, Hariprasad said Khalid was a “nationalist” and questioned ABVP’s moral authority to comment on him. He also accused the organisation of admiring Nathuram Godse, whom he described as “anti-national” and “the first terrorist of the country.”

The remarks have triggered criticism from opponents and added to the ongoing political controversy surrounding the proposed documentary screening and the debate over Khalid’s case.
